About LEOSU-DC Organizing Director Steve Maritas

By Calvin Wells LEOSU-DC Director

LEOSU-DC Organizing Director Steve Maritas has been at the forefront of the labor movement since the age of five (5) years old when he first walked his first picket line with his father a former NY District Council Union President.

Since graduating from Cornell University School of Industrial and Labor Relations, Maritas has worked for a number of labor unions from around the country in all trades and industries including the construction industry, industrial trades, nursing home & hospital industry and over the last 20 years in the law enforcement & security union industry.

Maritas natural organizing abilities have been noted by many labor leaders as well as the many union busting consultants, persuaders and management attorneys he has faced head on throughout the years.

Notably Maritas, was one of 30 labor union leaders and the only chosen security union leader to be invited twice to speak before the NLRB in Washington DC on behalf of law enforcement & security police professionals nationwide in support of modernizing representation-case procedures, making it easier for all workers throughout the U.S. to join a union without fear or intimidation which was passed this April 2015.

A recent report by the Roosevelt Institute titled Union Organizing in National Labor Board Elections clearly shows Maritas as Organizing Director was successful in organizing over 10,560 new members and having conducted over 262 NLRB elections within a 5 year period. Placing Maritas' Security Union Organizing Department in the top 5 most active unions in the country. (See NLRB Representation Elections and Win Rates, by 10 Most Active Unions, 2008–2012).

In addition to the above Maritas had a 68.7 Win Rate over this 5 year period placing him in the top 3 union organizers in the country.

Bloomberg Government has also recognized Maritas' ability noting a 161% membership growth vs a minus 23% membership growth in the private sector from the period 2000-2011.

While Maritas' true passion is to organize new members within the Law Enforcement & Security service industry, Maritas' takes pride in not only his abilities to organize new members, but also takes pride in his ability to represent his members before the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), as well as the negotiating table, training seminars and the servicing of our LEOSU-DC members.

Maritas is a true Labor Leader in every aspect of the labor movement, fighting for those who continue to seek his help as well as every worker for better pay, better benefits, better working conditions, job security, a voice on the job and of course those looking for RESPECT!
