Retail, Mall & Loss Prevention Security Division
LEOSU seeks to represent all retail, mall and loss prevention security officers working in the Washington DC Capitol area and/or within our jurisdiction and we welcome you to contact us or join us to find out how we can help you and your co-officers improve your wages, benefits and working conditions under a LEOSU union contract.
Retail security officers or mall security officers may be employed by a single store or the entire shopping center. The basic function of a mall security guard is to protect his employer from theft, vandalism and other illegal activity while maintaining order. Specific job duties vary from position to position. Mall security guards are also referred to as loss prevention agents.
Retail security officers or mall security either patrol a selected area or remain stationed at a single position. Guards assigned to patrol spend most of their shift on their feet. However some employers provide personal transportation systems that allow guards to zoom through mall corridors quickly without tiring themselves out. Guards assigned to a single station may be required to stand or be given a chair as part of their post.
Many Retail security officers or mall security are employed part-time, allowing workers to pursuit other interests. However weekend and holiday shifts are common. Security guards may also be asked to work longer hours during peak shopping seasons including Christmas.
Training and Education
Check local regulations for rules regarding special certifications. Some states legislate that security guards need to get a license that requires that they pass a background check. Special requirements may also be in place for officers that will be armed when on the job.
Most security guard positions only require a high school education and on-the-job training is provided. The American Society for Individual Security (ASIS), a leading occupational organization for security guards that refers to itself only by that abbreviation today, recommends employees complete 48 hours of training their first 100 days on the job. ASIS also offers a certification program.
Mall security officers may be required to wear uniforms so they are easily identifiable. Some employers provide the necessary attire but it is not unusual for mall management to ask employees to supply their own garb. Workers can purchase the items they need at specialty uniform shops. Some mall security guards work undercover in plain clothes to spot possible thieves.
Mall Security Officer
Provide security detail as outlined in the post orders and establish working relationships with customers, local law enforcement and fire departments. Security personnel will always perform job duties with a constant awareness of surroundings, making note of any and all activity that takes place in the assigned area. Security Officers must maintain a professional image and demonstrate excellent customer service at all times.
Control of entrances and movement of pedestrian and vehicle traffic.
Patrol of buildings and perimeters.
Escort of material and personnel.
Inspection of security and fire exposures.
Duties may vary depending on department size, organizational structure, geographic location and post assignments. Reasonable accommodations may be made to allow for certain ADA requirements. Overall general function of officers is to provide security detail as described below (Note: duties may vary depending on post orders):
Be on time and report to post in full uniform.
Maintain professional image that includes greeting customers, visitors and employees in a polite and friendly manner.
Be proactive in knowing all revisions to post orders and general information distributed by the customer and AFS.
Patrol physical property or maintain fixed post position, being diligent to report any suspicious activity and investigate accidents and criminal acts.
Monitor cameras or equipment in a continuous fashion as outlined in the post orders.
Maintain a working knowledge of all emergency policies, procedures and regulations to be able to respond to alarms, incidents and emergency situations.
Complete Daily Activity Reports, Log Book entries, Incident Reports and all relevant reports related to job assignment.
Make recommendations to management on better safety and loss prevention processes as identified during daily routine.
Have knowledge of any life safety systems, fire panels, CCTV system computer, and other such equipment to complete job assignments. Ensure continuous and safe operation of all elevators and access doors. Know authorized contractor personnel who are responsible for maintenance and upkeep of equipment.
Ensure training and compliance guidelines are met as outlined by AFS and other agencies regulating the customer / market.
Communicate on a daily basis with Security Supervisor any new Security Issues or changes that need to be considered or implemented.
