Effective January 2, 2014, the processing of all license applications, including license renewals, for private detectives, private investigators, special police officers, and security officers will be handled by the Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs (DCRA), although final signoff of each application will still be done by the Metropolitan Police Department, Security Officers Management Branch (SOMB). As a result, individuals interested in working in the private security industry should visit the Pearson Vue website at the following link:

DCRA staff will be working at the current Security Officers Management Branch location of 2000 14th Street, Northwest, Suite 302. The DCRA staff will be willing to assist individuals with questions and concerns as it relates to the initial application and renewal processes for security officers and special police officers.

The tables below list the application fees charged by DCRA. Please note that the fees reflect the license having a two-year term, rather than the previous one-year term.

New License Application Fees

Security Officer Individual License (2 Year License)

Total: $138 $103 payable to Pearson VUE $35 payable to DC Treasurer

Special Police Officer Individual License

Total: $119 $84 payable to Pearson VUE, $35 payable to DC Treasurer

License Renewal Fees

Security Officer Individual License (2 Year License)

Total: $103 payable to Pearson VUE

Special Police Officer Individual License

Total: $119 $84 payable to Pearson VUE $35 payable to DC Treasurer

** Note: A $50 late fee will be charged for renewal of a license that has expired **
